Sultana Kamal was born in 1950, in Dhaka to parents Kamal Uddin Ahmed and Sufia Kamal.

Her mother Sufia Kamal was a prominent poet and political activist in Bangladesh, a participant in the Bangladesh Liberation War as well.

Kamal studied at Leela Nagh’s Nari Shikhkha Mondir. Then she completed SSC at Azimpur Girls’ High School.
