In the months immediately after the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, , New Yorker Ranya Idliby's first-grade daughter came home from school and asked her mom whether they celebrated Hanukkah or Christmas.
Idliby, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent, decided then and there she needed to figure out a way to teach her children about being a Muslim in the United States. She knew Suzanne Oliver, an Episcopalian from the Midwest, because their kids attended the same school.
